Welcoming the New Binusian Students: FYP for Computer Science Batch 2028

The journey for the new Binusian students of the Computer Science program, Batch 2028, kicked off with an exciting and eventful three-day First Year Program (FYP) held at the FX Senayan and JWC campuses of Binus University International from September 2nd to September 4th, 2024. This event was meticulously crafted to help the new students immerse themselves into the Binus community, get acquainted with the program curriculum, and build connections with their peers, faculty, and alumni.

Day 1: Welcoming Talks and Info Sessions

The FYP began on September 2, 2024, with a warm welcome to the Computer Science students. The Deputy Head of the Computer Science Program, Mr. Ida Bagus Kerthyayana Manuaba, S.T., Ph.D and  The Head of Computer Science Program, Mr. Jude Joseph Lamug Martinez, MCS, led the opening session with an insightful talk about the curriculum, giving the new students a comprehensive overview of what to expect in their academic journey. Following this, students had the opportunity to meet their lecturers, who will guide them throughout their time at Binus University International.

A unique twist to the event was the introduction of a Treasure Hunt game, designed to foster teamwork and camaraderie among the students while familiarizing them with the campus environment. Additionally, a special Alumni Talk Show featured three distinguished Binus alumni: Reginald Evan from Batch 2025, Andre from Batch 2019, and Aimee from Batch 2023. Each shared their experiences, offered valuable advice, and inspired the new batch with stories of their career achievements and personal growth since graduating from Binus.

The day continued with an info session introducing the Google Developer Student Clubs (GDSC) and Robogals, two prominent student organizations at Binus University. GDSC aims to empower students through hands-on experience in software development, while Robogals encourages female students to pursue and excel in technology and engineering fields. Both organizations invited new students to join, emphasizing the benefits of becoming actively involved in the tech community.

The day concluded with a session hosted by the Language Center, highlighting the importance of communication skills and offering resources for language development, essential for future global opportunities.

Day 2: Academic Engagement and Exploration

On September 3, 2024, the second day of FYP focused on academic guidance and university partnerships. The day started with a session featuring guest lectures from partner universities, including RMIT, the University of Wollongong (UoW), and the University of Nottingham. These guest lecturers provided insights into the unique opportunities available through the university’s exchange and dual-degree programs, inspiring students to consider broadening their horizons through international academic experiences.

After the partner university session, students met their academic advisors for advisory discussions. This was an excellent opportunity for the new students to ask questions, seek advice, and discuss their academic goals and plans. Building a good relationship with their advisors early on will be crucial for their success throughout their academic journey.

The next part of the day saw students participating in a campus-wide Stamp Rally, a variation of the earlier Treasure Hunt game. This activity encouraged students to explore their new surroundings, meet new people, and learn more about the different departments and services available on campus.

The day concluded with a fundamental course for Computer Science, led by Zhandos Yessenbayev, Ph.D., a respected faculty member. The course introduced core computer science concepts, laying a solid foundation for the new students to build upon in the coming semesters.

Day 3: Creative Thinking and Celebration

The final day, September 4, 2024, was all about creativity and celebration. The day began with a Design Thinking session, where students engaged in hands-on activities to develop innovative problem-solving skills. This session was designed to encourage new students to think outside the box and approach challenges from different perspectives, a crucial skill in the tech industry.

The highlight of the day was the winner announcement for the Stamp Rally/Treasure Hunt game. Held in the Lobby of the JWC Campus, this event celebrated the students who had best navigated the game, rewarding their teamwork, problem-solving, and creativity.

Overall, the FYP event for Binus University International’s Computer Science Batch 2028 was a resounding success. It provided a well-rounded introduction to university life, combining academic guidance, social engagement, and creative activities. The new students left the event better prepared for the challenges ahead and excited to embark on their journey at Binus University International.

Welcome to all the new Binusians of Batch 2028! Your journey has just begun, and the possibilities are endless.
