Equipping students with on-demand skills through Data Storytelling Bootcamp 2024
The Communications Program of BINUS University International successfully hosted Data Storytelling Bootcamp 2024, aiming to facilitate students with future on-demand skills.
In this fast-changing era, students of the Communications major learn not only how to write news or a press release but also how to be experts in analyzing Big Data for decision-making, proposing business insights, and crafting a compelling story that can make an impact.
For that reason, the program collaborated with Tirto (tirto.id) to host an intensive upskilling bootcamp which took place from 11 to 15 November 2024.
This year’s event is the third edition of the same bootcamp with a focus on training and mentoring third-year students of the Communications program in producing data storytelling.
The first and second edition of the bootcamp was named Data Journalism Bootcamp, which specified introducing students to the world of data-driven journalism and training them to create data journalistic work.
With the wide application of storytelling in today’s business, this year’s bootcamp offers students knowledge and guidance in using data for different purposes.
In the 5-day event, students learned different topics from tirto.id mentors, consisting of journalists and researchers.
On the first day, as the first session began, students were introduced to data storytelling by Ms. Rina Nurjanah, the Program Development Manager of Tirto, who talked about the general idea of data storytelling work. In the following session, Mr. Nuran Wibisono, the managing editor of tirto.id guided students on data storytelling project brainstorming.
On the second day, the students were introduced to Data Gathering and Data Cleaning by Miss Fina Nailur Rohmah, Tirto‘s researcher and fact-checker. In the following session on the same day, Mr. Alfitra Akbar, a researcher and fact-checker of tirto.id mentored the students to practice and apply what they had learned in the previous session.
The topic on the next day revolved around Data Analytics Using Google Spreadsheets, which was delivered by Miss Farida Susanty, the Head of Research of tirto.id who taught students the principles and formulas for data analytics. After the break, her colleague, Mr. Alfons Yoshio, guided the students to practice how to do data analytics using Google spreadsheets.
The fourth day brought the students to learn Data Visualization Using Flourish with Mr. Alfitra Akbar and Mr. Alfons Yoshio. Both are the researchers in Tirto.
On the final day, students had a chance to present their data storytelling project, which they had developed in the previous four days. Mr. Nuran Wibisono and Miss Farida Susanty were present on that day to provide feedback and inputs for improving the final product of the project.
The final products from the bootcamp come in the form of interactive stories that will be published on tirto.id.
This event acts as an implementation of sustainable collaboration between the Communications Program of BINUS University International and industry partners to achieve BINUS’ goal of Fostering and Empowering Society as well as the Sustainable Development Goal of Industry, Innovation, and Production.
