Fact-checking and Media Literacy for Youth Webinar

Jakarta (15 June 2022). The communication program at Binus University International hosts a seminar entitled “Fact-checking and Media Literacy for Youth.”

This seminar was held in collaboration between the Communication program Binus International University with Kominfo and Siberkreasi.

Three topics were delivered by distinguish speakers from different backgrounds.

The first speaker was Adi Marsiela, the National Secretariat Coordinator for Cek Fakta Indonesia. He delivers a topic on “Fact-checking to verify hoaxes.”

The next speaker was Dr. Ayu Purwarianti, the head of the Artificial Intelligence Center at the Bandung Institute of Technology. She talked about Hoax detection with Natural Language Processing.

Speaking about Enhancing Awareness of Social Media Visual Literacy, the last speaker of the seminar was Oktora Irahadi representing Sierkreasi as the head of the Strategic Communication Division.

“Fact-checkers must be able to explain what methods they use in checking facts to maintain the validity of the information they report as well as to serve as a way to avoid conflict of interest,” Marseila explains.

Talking about Natural Language Processing (NLP), Dr. Ayu describes that NLP can be used to provide trust definition to sources of information.

Advising young people to practice their digital literacy, Irahadi says, “be careful on the Internet. We are still young. We never know our words could backfire to us if we don’t choose them wisely.”

The seminar ran for 2 hours and about 50 students, coming from different backgrounds, join in the zoom.
