Comm Space 2022: Data Journalism Bootcamp

The Communications program of Binus University International will be hosting a Data Journalism Bootcamp as the key event for the program’s student-centered annual event, COMM SPACE. The event takes place from 5 to 9 December 2022.

This bootcamp serves as an off-class program for the course Communication Data and Technology which facilitates students to learn the know-how and practice the skill of data journalism from experts in the industry.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) competencies and data analytics have become a focal interest in the current labor market. The demand for communication graduates with such competencies is currently omnipresent. For this reason, this Data Journalism Bootcamp provides Communication students of Binus University to gain extensive insights and competence in using data and technological tools to solve issues relevant to today’s society.

This bootcamp offers the students hands-on training on data journalism and mentorship in producing data journalistic work from professionals in media industries and beyond.

The lineup of professionals who become the facilitator and the mentor are listed below.

  6. Adi Marsiela, Editor-in-Chief of Ekuatorial

As a course project, this bootcamp encompasses knowledge-sharing sessions from experts on topics covering data journalism 101 and hands-on training on using tools for data journalistic work. The event also provides direct mentoring by the experts to the students to produce data-driven reports on social, political, or environmental issues that become the students’ interest. Through this bootcamp, the students are expected to achieve Binus Communication Student Outcomes:

  1. Being able to conduct social research using a communication perspective
  2. Being able to perform multi-channel communication
  3. Being able to implement humanity values and professional ethics in communication practices
  4. Being able to demonstrate leadership skills and teamwork in communication-related fields
  5. Being able to execute innovative and creative ideas through strategic collaborative partnerships within the media industry using current technological approaches
  6. Being able to apply interdisciplinary knowledge and skills in developing alternative solutions for problem-solving

This event brings a great opportunity for students to learn new knowledge and skill from experts and extend collaboration between the program and industries to realize Binus’ vision of fostering and empowering society.
