Guest lecture on Data Journalism

The Communication Program held a guest lecturer session in New Media and Newsroom Management class on 8 December 2020. The topic, Initiative Driven by Technology that Changes the Newsroom, was delivered by Adek Media Roza, a senior journalist who is also a PhD candidate from University of Technology Sidney, Australia.

He mentioned that we are now in the era of ubiquitous data. The technology development has brought us to the moment of data deluge.

The spread of data can be utilized to strengthen verification, produce more indepth news, provide insight and even trend-based prediction.

As a consequences, there are changing roles of the journalist. They have greater role and appreciation of new skills. Journalist definition is broader than the “conventional” one as it also involves data scientists, analysts, designers, programmers

New generation of journalist must equipped themselves with new skills. They must be familiar with data and new tools, have a sense of design and always learn from the expert.
