My Best Moment

The best moment of my life happened during high school. In 2013 during a student exchange program between our school and another school in Singapore. On that day, we were given free time to explore Singapore by ourselves. Before this trip, I was already smitten over a classmate of mine for almost half a year up to that point. Which made the trip even more meaningful. By Devent Lorenzius

Her hair was midnight-black and it flowed over her shoulders. Whenever she talked, her candy-sweet lips were absolutely enticing. And her personality! As she walks into a room, her bubbly joyous aura would fill the room with glee. It was such bliss to see her. She was the most brilliant girl in the class and she studies hard enough to put others to shame. That made her an astounding person, far wiser than her peers. Just by talking to her, I could go on for hours on end without ever getting bored. She was amazing.

During one of our walks in Orchard Road, Singapore. Me and a few friends, including this girl, were on a bus heading towards the next shopping mall. After walking under the sweltering hot sun, a cool air of the bus was a blessing. I hopped on a seat near the entrance, and the girl, let’s just call her ‘C’ for simplicity sake. Had decided to sit on my left, next to me. I was not surprised when she did this, after all we’ve had multiple times where we would sit right next to each other. But what transpired next caught me off guard. After a long day of walking and shopping. We were all feeling exhausted, and the cold air in the bus certainly helped us feel lethargic. Not long after we got on, C had fallen asleep, on my shoulder. As a young high school boy, this was an unbelievable turn of events.

I could feel her heavy head resting on me. My body was stiff, unable to react to this gentle touch. I could not fathom what was going on, my mind was as blank as an empty canvas. A few of my friends who were sitting across us, had noticed what was happening and were smirking from ear to ear. Having them tease me definitely did not calm me down. I have never in my life, up to that point in time, feel both embarrassed and elated. Since I have never had a girl that I had a crush on, be so close to me, even more so when she was sleeping on my shoulder. It took me awhile to process my thoughts and put the respective feelings away. And I eventually calmed my nerves and got used to the situation I was in. Not before long I was on cloud nine, I had never felt this happy. I was trying my hardest to stop grinning.

Once I felt comfortable. I had decided to take the biggest risk of life. That’s right. I put my head on hers, under the pretense of falling asleep. Just as a real couple would. And at this moment my heart was racing as fast as a race horse. At that very moment, I wished that time would stop, and that things would remain as it is forever. But alas, life goes on. We arrived at our stop and I had to wake her up. I got off the bus along with my friends to continue on with our day.

This eventful moment will always be a part of me. Whenever I look back to when I had the happiest moments with the one I liked. It helped me grow as a person, as it was a turning point in life. An experience that one would only get as they get older. That, is the best moment of my life.
