Apple Developers Academy @BINUS: A New Step to Become World Class Developers

Mobile application development skills are in high demand all around the world. However, in this era commonly referred to as ‘Industrial Revolution 4.0’, the supply of developers is still lacking in Indonesia. Therefore, opportunities to become developers are wide open. Because of that, BINUS INTERNATIONAL through the 3+1 program, which is a three years of study in class plus a one-year internship, provides the students the opportunity to become world-class app developers through the Apple Developers Academy @BINUS program.

Apple Developers Academy @BINUS is a collaboration between Apple — one of the most cutting-edge technology companies in the world — and BINUS University, and is the first developer academy built by Apple in Southeast Asia. The aim is to inspire and train the next generation to be mobile app developers using the world’s most advanced mobile operating system.

Kevin Abram, a student from the Business Information Systems program of BINUS INTERNATIONAL, was selected to be part of 194 participants for the second cohort which were selected from various universities in Indonesia. During the ten-month intensive training program, he had to adapt to new friends as well as new insights and knowledge. Kevin was challenged to develop himself through multi-discipline teaching and learning. Daily classes led by Apple-trained instructors who are experts provided the students with the skills and experiences to realize their app ideas and bring them to market on the App Store.

Kevin said that during his time in the academy he learned not only how to code and create an application, but also many more other aspects so that the application can truly provide solutions and solve problems for people. “Other than coding, I also learned the design and business aspects; therefore, my understanding became more comprehensive,” he explained.

On Tuesday, 14 January 2020, the Apple Developers Academy @BINUS graduated 194 students of its second cohort, who passed the ten-month intensive program. Conducted at the BSD Green Office Park Auditorium, the graduation ceremony was attended by Bambang Permadi Soemantri Brodjonegoro (Minister for Research and Technology/Chairman of National Agency for Research and Innovation), Harjanto (Director General of Metal, Machine, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries), Susiwijono Moegiarso (Representative of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia), Ahmed Zaki Iskandar (Regent of Tangerang), the Board of Management of BINUS Group, Apple representatives, industry partners, and the media.

In the graduation ceremony, the graduates got an opportunity to present their creations to industry representatives from various sectors such as e-commerce, FMCG, banking, finance, and also a number of successful start-ups. The graduation ceremony was followed by the graduate showcase on 15-16 January 2020, where all graduates with a total of 36 applications presented their applications’ capabilities and potential in front of various companies.

In the future, Kevin continued, he wants to become an agent of fostering and empowering who can provide solutions to society. “I want to become an application developer or an entrepreneur with a tech-based company, so that I can become a great help for people around me,” he concluded.
