Mastering Academic Integrity: Guest Lecture on Plagiarism and Thesis Writing at UAI

On November 29, 2025, the Master’s Program in Applied Linguistics at Universitas Al-Azhar Indonesia (UAI) invited Andrew Thren (Binus International) to deliver a guest lecture on two essential aspects of graduate-level academic writing: plagiarism and thesis writing techniques.
The session was designed to help students strengthen their understanding of scholarly ethics while equipping them with practical strategies for producing well-structured theses. Andrew emphasized that plagiarism is not limited to direct copying but can also appear in subtle forms such as inaccurate paraphrasing or careless citation. His explanations highlighted the importance of precision and responsibility in academic work.
Beyond plagiarism, Andrew guided students through the technical side of thesis writing, focusing on citation styles, bibliographies, and reference lists. He provided clear examples of how to document sources correctly, offering a roadmap for students as they prepare to enter the thesis-writing stage of their studies.
The lecture concluded with an interactive discussion, where students and faculty raised questions about citation practices, reference management tools, and plagiarism detection software. The dialogue underscored the importance of combining ethical awareness with technical skills to ensure academic integrity.
