Salmon paper. Serious type. A century of editorial authority (no pressure!). So when they asked me to redesign their entire podcast suite, ten shows under one cohesive brand, the challenge was holding two things at once: making each show feel distinct, while making all of them feel like they lived under the same brand roof.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"83c0\" class=\"ags agt zq bb agu agv agw gh lz agx agy gj mc pi agz ko pp pq aha kr px py ahb ku qf ahc bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">How Good Projects Find You<\/h3>\n<p id=\"466b\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afz aga zq agb b zz ahd agd age abb ahe agg agh pi ahf agj agk pq ahg agm agn py ahh agp agq agr om bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">It began with a piece of writing that found the right reader. I published\u00a0<a class=\"z ahi\" href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@thegoldvan\/how-to-design-eye-catching-podcast-cover-art-24b4e3ae99e2\" rel=\"noopener\" data-discover=\"true\">this post<\/a>\u00a0about designing podcast cover art in 2023 and it slowly grew into my most read article, by far. By late 2024, as that post had quietly carved out a niche corner of the internet, I got a message from the Financial Times\u2019 audio team. They liked my work and wanted to talk.<\/p>\n<p id=\"3cd5\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afz aga zq agb b zz agc agd age abb agf agg agh pi agi agj agk pq agl agm agn py ago agp agq agr om bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">What resonated was a combination of things: my independent studio work (<a class=\"z ahi\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldvan.co\/#\/missing-richard-simmons\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Missing Richard Simmons<\/a>, the \u201c<a class=\"z ahi\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goldvan.co\/#\/maria-bamford-comedy-special\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener ugc nofollow\">Ave Maria Bamford<\/a>\u201d comedy special, etc), but also my time at Spotify, where I worked on podcast visual identity that was designed to operate under a larger brand system. We needed to think not just about how each show should stand alone, but how the entire slate looked together as a unified group. On Apple Podcasts, your channel page and podcast cover art are your entire visual identity for a massive subset of potential listeners. This is where the caliber of your show gets judged before anyone hits play. A series of ten shows with no cohesive podcast visual identity is a missed opportunity to say,\u00a0<em class=\"ahl\">we\u2019re the Financial Times and here\u2019s how we show up in the podcast space.<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"3d4d\" class=\"ags agt zq bb agu agv agw gh lz agx agy gj mc pi agz ko pp pq aha kr px py ahb ku qf ahc bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\"><strong class=\"ah\">Building a Podcast Cover Art System<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"34fa\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afz aga zq agb b zz ahd agd age abb ahe agg agh pi ahf agj agk pq ahg agm agn py ahh agp agq agr om bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">The first thing I did before approaching the design of the series was to define the constraints. This is where you figure out things like: Is the brand logo required? Do we lean into the Financial Times signature salmon pink color? How do we handle host-driven shows vs theme-driven shows? The line work on the capital building is giving this a human touch, we are starting to like that. The compressed font treatment doesn\u2019t work well at small sizes. A graphic overlay won\u2019t work over a host\u2019s portrait. The FT salmon pink is stamped with the logo in the top left corner across the suite. We applied a specific graphic treatment to all imagery, both host and concept, and brought in some simple line work across both types of covers to unify the approach. Typography used the FT\u2019s own serif font across all titles, with a specific mixed-weight treatment of bold and regular, focusing the bold on the more impactful word. Some covers were visually strong but didn\u2019t hold up in the context of the larger suite. This is where good ideas need to be shelved. That\u2019s just part of the process. It stopped feeling like starting from scratch with each podcast cover design and started to feel like a workable template. Like using a similar foundation to build from with different flexible pieces. A podcast visual identity at this scale has to flex across a lot of surfaces \u2014 Spotify\u2019s channel pages, Apple Podcasts\u2019 full-screen mobile takeover, the FT website, social media graphics, marketing materials, and promotional banners. That means designing podcast artwork that can be flexible across all of these different dimensions so it isn\u2019t stretched, cropped, or adapted in ways you can\u2019t fully anticipate.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4802\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afz aga zq agb b zz agc agd age abb agf agg agh pi agi agj agk pq agl agm agn py ago agp agq agr om bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">By the time this project wrapped, we were looking at nearly 300 individual files across the suite of iterations and final exports. It\u2019s the first impression that a potential listener uses to decide whether they want to jump in, and it tells them whether your show belongs in the same conversation as the shows they already love.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0f0a\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afz aga zq agb b zz agc agd age abb agf agg agh pi agi agj agk pq agl agm agn py ago agp agq agr om bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">A single great podcast cover art design is a start, but a podcast suite with a real visual system behind it is what gives you an audio brand.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1451\" class=\"pw-post-body-paragraph afz aga zq agb b zz agc agd age abb agf agg agh pi agi agj agk pq agl agm agn py ago agp agq agr om bg\" data-selectable-paragraph=\"\">If you\u2019re a media company, a network, or a legacy brand entering the podcast space with multiple shows that aren\u2019t quite working together, that\u2019s a problem.
