Unlike cash, it does not exist as physical notes or coins. Instead, it exists online and can be sent from one person to another through a computer network.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"350\" data-end=\"658\">To use cryptocurrency, a person usually needs a <strong data-start=\"398\" data-end=\"416\">digital wallet<\/strong>. A digital wallet is an app or software that allows users to store, send, and receive crypto. It does not \u201chold\u201d coins in the same way a physical wallet holds cash. Instead, it stores the information needed to access and control your crypto.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"660\" data-end=\"1063\">Two important terms in crypto are <strong data-start=\"694\" data-end=\"708\">public key<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"713\" data-end=\"728\">private key<\/strong>. A <strong data-start=\"732\" data-end=\"746\">public key<\/strong> is like an account number or an email address. You can share it with others so they can send crypto to you. A <strong data-start=\"857\" data-end=\"872\">private key<\/strong> is like a secret password or PIN. It proves that you are the owner and gives you control over your crypto. This key must be kept safe, because if someone gets it, they can access your funds.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1065\" data-end=\"1489\">When someone sends crypto, the transaction is checked by a network of computers. This is where the term <strong data-start=\"1169\" data-end=\"1183\">blockchain<\/strong> comes in. A blockchain is a shared digital record, sometimes called a <strong data-start=\"1254\" data-end=\"1264\">ledger<\/strong>, that keeps track of transactions. Instead of one bank keeping the record, many computers in the network keep copies of it. That is why crypto is often called <strong data-start=\"1424\" data-end=\"1441\">decentralized<\/strong> \u2014 it is not controlled by just one institution.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1491\" data-end=\"1721\">Transactions are grouped into <strong data-start=\"1521\" data-end=\"1531\">blocks<\/strong>, and each new block is linked to earlier ones, forming a chain \u2014 hence the name blockchain. Once a transaction is confirmed and added to the blockchain, it becomes very difficult to change.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1723\" data-end=\"1928\">Another common term is <strong data-start=\"1746\" data-end=\"1762\">cryptography<\/strong>. This refers to the security methods and complex codes used to protect transactions and ownership. It helps ensure that crypto transfers are secure and hard to fake.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1930\" data-end=\"2146\">Crypto can be useful for fast digital transfers, but it also comes with risks. One key term here is <strong data-start=\"2030\" data-end=\"2044\">volatility<\/strong>, which means prices can rise or fall very quickly.
