Eric Sim, CFA, Shares Insights on ‘Small Actions, Big Career Success’ with Finance Students at BINUS International

BINUS International’s Finance program recently welcomed esteemed finance professional and author, Eric Sim, CFA, a former managing director at UBS Investment Bank and founder of the Institute of Life, for an inspiring talk on career success. Drawing from his book, Small Actions, Big Career Success, Sim shared practical insights and personal experiences that resonated deeply with students aspiring to build their careers in finance.

During the session, Sim emphasized how small, consistent actions can lead to significant professional growth. He recounted his journey from a modest background to a successful career in finance, highlighting the importance of networking, resilience, and continuous learning. Through engaging anecdotes and real-world examples, he encouraged students to take proactive steps in shaping their careers. Sim also introduced the ‘Combo List’ from his book, which outlines key skills and experiences that professionals should develop to stand out. Additionally, he shared his ‘How to Succeed’ framework, which includes building a strong personal brand, consistently delivering value, and cultivating meaningful relationships in the industry.

The session also featured Rahmat Sugiono Halim, CFA, and Melisa Hendrawati, Chief Financial Officer (CFO) and Finance Director at Superbank. Superbank is a digital banking service created through a collaboration between Grab, Emtek, Singtel, and KakaoBank. They emphasized the importance of earning a CFA designation and broadening professional networks to enhance career opportunities in the finance industry.

Students had the opportunity to interact with Eric Sim, Rahmat Halim, and Melisa Hendrawati during a lively Q&A session, where they addressed questions about career progression, overcoming setbacks, and leveraging social media for professional branding. Their advice on embracing opportunities and maintaining a growth mindset left a lasting impression on attendees.

The event was part of BINUS International’s ongoing efforts to bridge academic learning with industry insights, equipping students with the knowledge and motivation to excel in the competitive finance sector.

We thank Eric Sim, Rahmat Sugiono Halim, and Melisa Hendrawati for their valuable time and inspiring words, and we look forward to more enriching sessions that prepare our students for future success.
