BINUS INTERNATIONAL in Jakarta Fashion Week 2013

A current project between Northumbria University and BINUS International University has seen third-year fashion students design an Indonesia-inspired menswear collection, which will be the first ever undergraduate collection to be unveiled and showcased at Jakarta Fashion Week on Monday 5 November.

Students Daniel Fradgley and Victoria Schofield, who worked with Indonesian villagers to weave the fabrics for their collection during the summer, will return to South East Asia this weekend to prepare for the show.

Professor Wathey said, “Northumbria University has the most successful UK design school operating in Indonesia, recruiting more design students than any other institution. Our success and growth in Indonesia is testament to the University’s global reputation as being at the forefront of design practice, design learning and design research. This will be clearly demonstrated later this week when Northumbria students become the first ever undergraduates to showcase their collections at Jakarta Fashion Week.

This project has been a great opportunity for Northumbria University students to experience traditions and craftsmanship that are often hidden from mainstream fashion. By taking part in the Jakarta Fashion Show and showcasing their collections they are helping to revive a dying craft by bringing the skills to a new platform that add a modern twist to traditional designs.

Since Northumbria University formed its relationship with Binus University three years ago, the partnership has proven to be mutually beneficial, with exchange trips and research projects creating invaluable cultural insights and inspiring new ways of thinking and doing for staff and students from both institutions.
